Epoch Co. Ltd.

2004 (submitted by various people) Q: What time of year are new Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters released?
A: All three of the major distributors, Epoch, Flair and Int. Play, usually have their large introduction of new items in the spring, typically between late February and April. But new figures can be released at any time.
10-6-2004 (submitted by various Abigail) Q: Where do all your Sylvanians live?
A: Uh. . . um. . . well, the actually live in four large boxes in my closet. It doesn't seem very nice, but so far none of them have complained.
11-24-2004 (submitted by various Nao) Q: Are Japanese Timbertop bears the same size as US Timbertop bears?
A: No. All Japanese figures are slightly taller than their US or UK version.
1-2-04 (submitted by Vicky) Q: I was wondering if you are able to help me out with something. I have a very large (much bigger than normal) Sylvanian Rabbit, she is light grey, Has a pretty dress on with "Sylvanian Families" on the front and she has "TOMY" under her foot. When you turn a switch on, on her back, and put her up to the stereo or tv or anything that makes noise, her mouth moves and her ears twitch. She is so cute! However, I haven't been able to find any information about how old she is, where she comes from, what her name is or anything. Are you able to direct me to any information on this cute rabbit?
A: The figure you have is called a Sylvanian Families Story Tellin’ Performer. She was released in the late 80s, probably around 1988. The gray rabbit is named Crystal Babblebrook. She originally came with a tape, and when you played the tape her mouth moved, so it looked like she was telling a story. She is most likely from the US, although they were also sold in England and Japan In the US there were 8 released, a boy and girl each of gray rabbits, brown rabbits, gray bears and brown bears.
1-1-04 (submitted by Phua) Q: Can you tell me is there any Sylvanian Club in Malaysia?
A: To the best of my knowledge, there is not a Sylvanian Club in Malaysia. Currently there are only clubs in Japan and England. You can be members of either club from anywhere in the world. Both Sylvanian Families Hong Kong and Calico Critters USA have considered starting an official club, but they have not done so yet.
12-31-03 (submitted by Phua) Q: Who is the inventor of Sylvanian Families?
A: Sylvanian Families were originally released by Epoch Ltd. in Japan in 1984. Although only Epoch knows for sure, most likely a team of designers at Epoch were the “inventors” of Sylvanians.
12-31-03 (submitted by Phua) Q: Why don't you have an older brother & sister in the Cream Cats family? And why don't you have grandparents in the Cream Cats family?
A: The Urban Life Cream cat family does not have older brothers and sisters nor grandparents. Grandparents and older siblings were never released for any Urban life family. Only a few families have ever had grandparents, and even fewer have had older brothers and sisters.
11-21-03 (submitted by Jenifer) Q: could you tell me if their was more than one set of raccoons, the chestnut raccoons are grey; is there another set that are light coloured with brown masks or are these another animal?
A: Yes, there are two raccoon families. The Chestnuts are grey as you mentioned, and the second are light brown: The Mulberries. On my website I refer to them as Red Pandas because I feel that the red panda is indeed the animal that the Mulberries are based on. The Japanese world for Red Panda and Raccoon is the same, which is probably why they are called Raccoons in the US/UK markets. Also it was probably used for marketing reasons, as the raccoon is a more recognizable animal.
11-16-03 (submitted by April) Q: Where did you obtain your bottle babies for the JP Sylvanian collection?
A: The Bottle Babies are sold in Japan, and they are pretty hard to get a hold of outside of the country. I would not be surprised if they are released soon in the US or UK, since they seem to be very popular. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
